Accessibility Statement

This accessibility statement applies to the website and social media channels associated with Calton Community Council

This website is run by volunteer Community Councillors at Calton Community Council. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • You cannot modify the line height or spacing of text – we are not currently aware of a method to rectify this
  • Pages do not have appropriate titles – we aim to rectify this by January 2023
  • We do not have alternative navigation options. We aim to add a search bar and a sitemap in the footer by January 2023

Calton Community Council is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Disproportionate burden

Calton Community Council strives to make this website accessible, however, it is hosted by third-party software and maintained by volunteers with minimal I.T. knowledge or accessibility training. If opportunities arise for Councillors to increase their understanding of the challenges those with accessibility needs face, or are presented with opportunities to improve the website’s current accessibility, they will do so.

We are currently aware of the following issues:

  • Pages do not have appropriate titles – we aim to rectify this by January 2022
  • We do not have alternative navigation options. We aim to add a search bar and a sitemap in the footer by January 2023

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 20/10/2022. It was last reviewed on 20/10/2022.

This website was last tested on 20/10/2022. The test was carried out by Chloe Pimblett, a Community Councillor.

The findings of this test are as follows:

  • All headings are styled correctly
  • Our website is legible when its stylesheet is removed
  • All instructions are described without the need for visual cues
  • Link text is not vague (there are no links that merely state “click here” or “more information”)
  • Pages do not have titles – and we are in the process of adding these. This should be completed by January 2023
  • Calton Community Council’s website currently only uses decorative images, but many of these are also accompanied by alt-text
  • The website does not currently contain any audio or video content
  • All forms are marked up correctly
  • Only one form is used (the Contact Us form), so it is automatically consistent
  • All error messages are valid and helpful
  • PDFs and other documents meet accessibility requirements, and we will provide Word or other alternative formats if requested
  • The website is orientable on a mobile device
  • The website is navigable with one finger
  • 3 sample pages were tabbed through and were clear and navigable, as well as having a “skip to content” option
  • The contact form is accessible by tabbing
  • 3 sample pages were zoomed to 300%, where they were fully legible
  • Our contrast ratio is currently 7:1. We are aware of this issue and aim to rectify it by November 2022
  • This website does not contain any flashing or blinking content
  • We aim to add a search bar and site map by January 2023
  • All links trigger on the up-press of the mouse
  • Tables and lists are stylized properly
  • Our language is currently set to American English. We would prefer if this was British English, but do not currently have the capability to adjust this. If this becomes an issue for any website user, contact us and we will prioritise a fix
