Safety Concerns – Tobago Street

CCC received a plea for help from a concerned local resident recenly about road safety due to HGV Access at Tobago Street / Drake Street, Glasgow G40 with a request for site investigation.

In summary, residents have concerns regarding road safety in the area due to the presence of large lorries making deliveries to local factories.

We forwarded their concerns to Cllr Linda Pike and we received this response via her from the GROUP MANAGER – BUILDING STANDARDS, NEIGHBOURHOODS REGENERATION AND SUSTAINABILITY.

” In relation to the road closure affecting Tobago Street, the exclusion zone remains necessary because of the continuing public safety risk associated with the dangerous building at 110–114 Tobago Street / 252–254 Stevenson Street.

Following detailed structural inspections, Building Standards identified significant deterioration and structural defects affecting the support to the southern gable wall. Given the potential risk to the public, emergency measures were put in place, including the evacuation of the building and the establishment of an exclusion zone.

Since then, Building Standards and the Private Sector Housing Team have been working with the owners and their professional advisers to progress a permanent repair solution. Access has been provided to the owners’ structural engineers to undertake the necessary surveys and investigations. However, a final repair scheme has not yet been submitted to Building Standards for consideration.

Until an acceptable structural solution has been agreed and the necessary works completed, the building cannot be considered safe and the exclusion zone must remain in place to protect residents, businesses, pedestrians and road users.

We fully appreciate the significant disruption that the continuing restrictions are causing to the local community. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide a firm timescale for the removal of the exclusion zone at this stage, as this is dependent upon the owners progressing and implementing an acceptable repair solution.

Building Standards will continue to engage with the owners and their representatives and will give priority to the assessment of any structural proposals once received. The restrictions will also remain under regular review, but public safety must remain the overriding consideration until the identified danger has been satisfactorily addressed.

I trust this provides a helpful update.

The other issues raised will be responded to in due course.

Kind regards,”
