TRNSMT – World Cup Screening?

On Dec 23rd an article appeared in the National suggesting that TRNSMT were considering how to give people the opportunity to watch Scotland playing in the World Cup in June this year. Clipped photo of the article shown below.

The Chair of CCC has written to GCC Cllrs and GCC Council officials on the day the article appeared raising concerns. If you have concerns about the possibility of this happening, please contact CCC using info@calton-community-council.scot

Email Shown below:

“Dear Council officials and Councillors,

I regret writing to you at what should be a time for rest and enjoyment, but yesterday we were made aware of yet another potential onslaught on life for those people who live near Glasgow Green, use Glasgow Green for rest and recreation and those people who are extremely concerned at the growing commercial exploitation of this “dear green space”. Please see the attachment from yesterday’s newspaper for this latest threat.

Glasgow Green is increasingly being used for commercial events. A significant number of people go away each summer specifically to avoid the noise and disruption of TRNSMT and some have moved house to get away from it. In September we heard, again in the press, of the current event, the “Winter Wonderland” on the Green, before anyone associated with the City Council, or the event, had the common decency to communicate with residents.

The “Winter Wonderland” has now been going every day for almost 5 weeks until 10pm (or later) with another 9 days to go. Residents were woken at 06:15 and again at 07:30 this morning by the noise of commercial vehicles servicing the event. This is not conducive to a restful holiday.

To then read in the press that the Men’s Football World Cup in June might be broadcast, not only to people on the Green, but to residents trying to sleep before going to school or work the next morning is a giant step too far. Residents will be hit with the noise, not only of the broadcast, but fans, many of whom will have been drinking, some to excess, cheering, shouting, slamming the doors of taxis and cars as they arrive and leave and, one suspects, the noise of emergency vehicles arriving and leaving as they deal with incidents.

Please will you confirm that this is just a pipe dream, just a message, like many others, sent to Santa, from Geoff Ellis?”
